After being connected to that long period of skinny jeans, I got fed up with those ill-fitting denim and was ready to say hello to wide-leg jeans trend. So I was excited and all set up to grasp the sigh of relief with the loose-flowing and comfortable design that allowed my legs to breathe with more maneuverability.
Although skinny pants have long been in the lean silhouette, the alluring versatility and unmatched comfort of wide-legs made them among those pieces that repeatedly emerge on the surface of time.
While working as a fashion editor, I have seen the comeback of several fashion pieces but fewer than wide-leg jeans. When I looked closer into this trend and researched into the rich history of wide-leg jeans, the trend dates back to the 1920s.
Commonly used for beach attire, casual, and loungewear purposes, they remained popular until the 1950s and resurfaced in the 1970s. Although those flared pants were inspired by 1930s fashion, they were then available in denim, with exaggeratedly wide leg openings.
The trend waved again in 2022 after people switched back to comfy wear during their stay-at-home days. To date, for designers like Levi’s, Gucci, Balenciaga, Dior, YSL, SAINT LAURENT, and other mainstream denim brands, these classic vintage pants have gracefully been on the fashion landscape.
The recent resurgence of baggy wide-leg jeans is also specially attributed to Gen-Z. Their prompt shift to wide-leg jeans and obsession with these pants played a significant role in popularizing their trend also known as “Y2K”. Specifically over the past few months when stylish stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, and Dakota Johnson adopted this trend, proving that wide-leg jean are never dead.
Although the resurfacing of these outfits gained significant traction among the younger generation, it would be a mistake to say that this trend is exclusively for the young. It is instead a versatile staple that can transcend generations and provide comfort and style to everyone.
Wide leg flare pants come in a variety of styles to compliment your wardrobe and give a twist to your occasional wear. Whether it’s summertime at the bowling alley or walking errands at cold night, the wide-leg jeans have got you covered in their variety and versatility.
Another reason for their popularity is their adaptability to any age group and body type. Women of any age with straight, curvy, or boxy figures can wear them. Even brands like Reformation also offer different sizing options allowing them to try various wide-leg jean outfit combinations.
For example, If you want a laid-back casual yet chic look then try flared-out wide-leg jeans. On the other hand, your straight-leg wide jean pants that go for both a work outfit and casual attire are not categorized as wide pants but are roomier and baggier to give your legs wide room with a more sleek and taller appearance that’s why petite also loved them.
